About The Author

I’ve resisted a website for years—I’m a bit of an introvert and not great at self-promotion. As far as writing about Me, I find other people more interesting. But a lot has shifted this year with Covid, BLM, the upending of our country and its systems; it seems time to emerge and show up, to speak from wherever and whoever we are. To locate ourselves for each other, to connect. So here I am.

A few basics: I grew up in San Francisco, with roots in the Pacific Northwest. I graduated from Georgetown University and the Iowa Writer’s Workshop and have lived in Oregon, Kenya, Italy, South Africa and have traveled extensively—most recently to Madagascar, the Russian Far East and Alaska (where I would go tomorrow if I could). I work on documentary films, mentor young people, have taught almost every level of school (and love it), have edited, written and consulted in a number of creative capacities. In the past five years, I’ve become active in an organization called Street Child, which supports children living in poverty in the world’s toughest places to go to school and learn to read and write. I live in Berkeley in a rambling old craftsman which houses any variety of artists, filmmakers and students—along with two dachshunds and one son, (who may or may not go to college in the fall). Like most of you, I’ll be here, in this spot, indefinitely. Thank god for internal lives.

I’m always working on something—watch this space!
